Program:

From Colored Coins to Crypto Kitties to Beeple:  Legal and Ethical Issues from the First Decade of NFTs

Non-fungible tokens -- mathematically unique, non-interchangeable units of data stored on digital ledgers (blockchains) and traded on digital exchanges -- have become a billion-dollar medium for international commerce in high-value assets including art and other creative works, historical artifacts, and real estate.

HIPLA's first program of 2022 examines the legal issues raised by different kinds of NFTs, including copyrights and trademark protectionName-Image-Likeness licensing, transaction structuring, and protection against counterfeiting.  The program then explores the potentially unfamiliar ethical and legal risks -- including securities law, privacy concenrns, and other compliance issues -- that can arise in representing clients in NFT transactions and related matters.
