Texas CLE credit: 1 Hour - Course No. 174253581
Speaker:
Carlotta Ramirez, J.D.
Museum Counsel at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Ms. Ramirez specializes in art and museum law as well as the formulation and implementation of institutional policy. Working in an area where the law and museum administration intersect, Ms. Ramirez has had the opportunity to work with other attorneys, professional artists, galleries, museum curators, and museum executives on an assortment of legal projects. Her daily work at the museum spans a variety of legal practice areas, including cultural property law, international law, contracts, intellectual property, trusts and estates, and tax, to name a few. A career highlight for Ms. Ramirez was negotiating the creation and purchase of 8 major site-specific commissioned artworks for the museum’s Nancy and Rich Kinder building, including works by El Anatsui, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Ai Weiwei, and Cristina Iglesias. As a licensed attorney in her 24th year of practice (the last 15 with The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), Ms. Ramirez also runs a legal internship program at the museum, which provides local law students the opportunity to learn various aspects of art and museum law in an institutional setting. She has had over 100 students intern through her program to learn about the business aspects of the museum world.
