Join the Intellectual Property Student Organization and the Houston Law Review for a discussion with Simon Tam of The Slants about his journey to the U.S. Supreme Court that began with the band’s attempt to register its name with the U.S. Trademark Office and ended with the Supreme Court’s decision in Matal v. Tam, 137 S. Ct. 1744 (2017), which held that certain aspects of the trademark statute are subject to First Amendment scrutiny and that denying registration to potentially disparaging marks is unconstitutional. There are a small number of seats available for HIPLA members given the expected strong student attendance. Registration is required.
